Why maps matter more than a site (for a local business)
When a person searches for a dental clinic, a tire shop or a coffee house, they increasingly open not search but maps — Yandex Maps or 2GIS. They look at the rating, reviews, photos, opening hours — and call. They may not open your wonderful site at all. So for a business “with an address”, a map listing is a full-fledged sales channel, often the main one.
Step 1. Yandex Business: fill in everything
The listing is managed through Yandex Business (business.yandex.ru). What affects positions in map results:
- Profile completeness. Categories (main + additional), phone, site, opening hours, payment methods, features — fill everything in until the green check.
- The correct main category. “Dental clinic”, not the generic “Medical center” — you compete on the main category.
- Photos. Real ones: the facade (so people find the entrance!), the hall, the team, the work. Listings with 20+ photos get noticeably more clicks than those with three.
- Goods and services with prices. This section is indexed and takes part in map search.
- Posts and news — a signal that the business is alive.
Step 2. Reviews and rating — the main factor
The rating and freshness of reviews decide everything: between a 4.8 with a week-old review and a 4.2 whose last review is a year old, the client doesn’t hesitate for a second.
- Ask for reviews from satisfied clients: a QR code at the counter, a link in an SMS after the order, a request from the receptionist. This is allowed; buying fakes is not — for them maps cut the rating and block listings.
- Reply to all reviews, especially negative ones: calmly, to the point, with an offer to solve the problem. Future clients read the replies, not the review’s author.
- Don’t game it. Ten reviews in a day from new accounts is a red flag for anti-fraud.
Step 3. 2GIS — don’t forget it
In the regions 2GIS is often more popular than Yandex Maps, especially in B2B and automotive niches. The logic is the same: a complete listing, photos, replies to reviews. Plus 2GIS has paid priority placement — in competitive niches it pays off.
Step 4. Local pages on the site
The site and maps reinforce each other:
- On the site — a contacts page with the address, a map, directions and
LocalBusinessmarkup (Schema.org). - The name, address and phone (NAP) are identical everywhere: site, maps, directories, social media.
- If there are several locations — a separate page for each: “Auto shop on Lenina”, “Auto shop in Zarechye”.
- In the text — the city and districts: for the query “tire fitting Mytishchi” you won’t reach the top without the word “Mytishchi” on the page.
What to measure
Yandex Business shows statistics: listing impressions, route requests, calls, clicks to the site. Look at the dynamics once a month. Calls from maps can be counted with a substitute number — you’ll see how much money the listing brings.
Takeaway
Local SEO is the cheapest marketing for a business with an address: listings are free, competitors are lazy, and the clients are right there, within a three-kilometer radius. Fill the profiles in fully, set up a flow of reviews, reply to negativity — and in 2–3 months you’ll see call growth. Need help — we’ll help set up both maps and the site.
